Mass of Dust in the Martian Atmosphere
نویسندگان
چکیده
1 Estimates of the mass of dust suspended in the Martian atmosphere are derived from global and regional 9 pm opacity maps produced from Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper data. During the peak of the 1977b storm, a total dust mass of approximately 101 S gm was suspended, equivalent to 10-3 gm/cm2, or a layer 4 Lm thick. During a local dust storm near Solis Planum at Ls 227°, approximately 3.56 x 1013 gm of dust were lofted, equal to about an 18 pm layer in that vicinity.

Structure and dynamics of the Martian lower and middle atmosphere as observed by the Mars Climate Sounder: Seasonal variations in zonal mean temperature, dust, and water ice aerosols
[1] The first Martian year and a half of observations by the Mars Climate Sounder aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has revealed new details of the thermal structure and distributions of dust and water ice in the atmosphere. The Martian atmosphere is shown in the observations by the Mars Climate Sounder to vary seasonally between two modes: a symmetrical equinoctial structure with middle a...
متن کاملElectrical discharges and broadband radio emission by Martian dust devils and dust storms
[1] Triboelectric charging of saltating and colliding sand and dust particles produces strong electric fields in terrestrial dust devils and dust storms. Acceleration of the charged particles, as well as microdischarges between them, generates wideband electromagnetic radiation. Similar phenomena are expected to be ubiquitous on Mars, because Martian dust devils and dust storms are larger, stro...
متن کاملSpectroscopic identification of carbonate minerals in the martian dust.
Thermal infrared spectra of the martian surface indicate the presence of small concentrations (approximately 2 to 5 weight %) of carbonates, specifically dominated by magnesite (MgCO3). The carbonates are widely distributed in the martian dust, and there is no indication of a concentrated source. The presence of small concentrations of carbonate minerals in the surface dust and in martian meteo...
متن کاملAssessing Atmospheric Predictability on Mars Using Numerical Weather Pre- Diction and Data Assimilation
The intrinsic and practical predictability of the Martian atmosphere is determined by use of a comprehensive numerical circulation model and ensemble forecasting techniques. Initial conditions were derived for various seasons of the Martian climate from newly available assimilations of global observations of temperature and dust optical depth in the Martian atmosphere, obtained by the Thermal E...
متن کاملPLANETARY SCIENCE Dust observations at orbital altitudes surrounding Mars
Dust is common close to the martian surface, but no known process can lift appreciable concentrations of particles to altitudes above ~150 kilometers. We present observations of dust at altitudes ranging from 150 to above 1000 kilometers by the Langmuir Probe and Wave instrument on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution spacecraft. Based on its distribution, we interpret this dust to be inte...
